Meet Liz Brown

Liz Brown is our featured member of the month. Liz is a journalist, novelist, stand-up comedian, and social worker.  Liz brings her son to get her writing done. Liz just celebrated her 1 year anniversary with Collab&Play in June!

Tell us about the work you do:

In addition to working as a content curator for Hulu, I’m a freelance writer and novelist. A piece that I finished here at Collab & Play was featured on MarieClaire.com and syndicated on Cosmopolitan, Elle and the front page of Yahoo. I’m also a regular contributor to Vice.com’s health website Tonic. I’m currently working on a memoir book proposal based on the Marie Claire piece as well as two novels and have a new article forthcoming on GoodHousekeeping.com. I also do stand up comedy and was a member of the Sunday Company at the Groundlings Theater.

What is your best piece of advice you would like to share?

Getting your writing published can feel impossible when you’re just getting started and it feels like just one rejection after another. Last year I set a goal for myself to get at least 50 rejections of my writing to help myself get past the fear of rejection. I only ended up with 17 rejections by the end of the year, and a whole bunch of published clips. The key is to just keep pitching and writing no matter what.

When not at Collab&Play, how are you most likely spending your time?

Folding John’s laundry, cooking John’s food, dirtying the laundry by cleaning up the food John throws on the floor, and watching “Curious George”–over…and over…and OVER again.

Share some fun facts about yourself:

I was once on the $25,000 Pyramid with host Donny Osmond. I won $11,400, a computer, and a trip to a luxury resort in Grenada which was wiped out by a hurricane before I could go on the trip.
